Kyudo is Coming to Itten Dojo

Kyudo, the traditional Japanese art of archery, is a meditative and disciplined practice that blends physical skill, mental focus, and spiritual refinement. Known as “the way of the bow,” kyudo is more than just hitting a target; it is a path toward self-improvement and harmony. Practitioners, or kyudo-ka, aim to achieve a state of shin-zen-bi—truth, goodness, and beauty—through the precise execution of each shot. Rooted in centuries-old samurai traditions, kyudo emphasizes etiquette, mindfulness, and grace, making it a unique martial art that cultivates both inner calm and outward precision. Best of all, kyudo can be practiced by virtually anyone.

This coming winter (dates to be announced), Itten Dojo will host Sabastian Velilla Sensei of the Florida Budokan (floridabudokan.org) for a weekend seminar introducing kyudo to central Pennsylvania and laying the foundation for ongoing training at our dojo. Following the seminar, we plan to establish a kyudo study group under the guidance of Velilla Sensei and in coordination with the Japanese Martial Arts Center. Our goal will be to add at least two regular practices each week to the dojo training schedule.

Itten Dojo kyudo training under the guidance of Velilla Sensei will follow the structured techniques outlined by the Dai Nippon Kyudo Kai, ensuring authenticity and adherence to traditional forms. Practitioners will begin by learning the hassetsu, the eight stages of shooting, which include precise movements from stance to release. Each step is performed with deliberate care, fostering a deep connection between body, mind, and bow. We will create a serene environment within which students can begin to build expertise with the Japanese yumi (asymmetrical bow) and develop the focus required to align their spirit with the arrow’s flight.

Kyudo is accessible to all, regardless of age or physical ability, as it prioritizes mental clarity and technique over brute strength. Velilla Sensei, in-person or via video, will guide us through the intricacies of kyudo, from handling the bow and arrow to mastering the ceremonial aspects of the practice. We intend our future study group practices to emphasize mutual respect, patience, and personal growth, creating a supportive community for beginners. Whether you seek to refine your focus or explore a traditional martial art, kyudo offers a profound journey of self-discovery.

If this appeals to you, we invite you to join us at Itten Dojo to experience the elegance and depth of kyudo. Through consistent practice, you will develop not only archery skills but also a greater sense of balance and mindfulness that extends beyond the dojo. Watch for the announcement of our first seminar with Velilla Sensei. Discover the transformative power of kyudo and become part of a tradition that has inspired generations.
